Turmeric (?), n. [F. terre-mérite, NL. terramerita, turmerica; apparently meaning, excellent earth, but perhaps a corruption of Ar. kurkum. Cf. Curcuma.] 1. (Bot.) An East Indian plant of the genus Curcuma, of the Ginger family.
