Pholas (?), n.; pl. Pholades (#). [NL., fr. Gr. &unr_;, &unr_;, a kind of mollusk.] (Zoöl.) Any one of numerous species of marine bivalve mollusks of the genus Pholas, or family Pholadidæ. They bore holes for themselves in clay, peat, and soft rocks.
