A monthly re-enactment in Malta, concerning the Napoleonic occupation of Malta between 1798-1800. Prior to the french invasion, The Order of St. John was the body of sovereignty over the Maltese Islands. During his invasion of the Islands, Napoleon ousted the Royalist order, after settling for 268 years (they arrived in 1530 and the French quickly establish an administration of French Republicanism. The local Maltese population was initially content with getting rid of its Royal masters. However, when the French began to show their anti-clerical policies through action , such as looting precious valuables from the Maltese churches, the Maltese became enraged and took to arms against the French. The French locked themselves up in the fortifications in the Grand Harbour Area.During the French occupation, Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson came to hear of this French occupation and immediately, along with the Portuguese Navy, established a Naval Blockade around the Maltese Archipelago. British Marines and Sailors co-operated with Maltese Militias in order to defeat the French and the capitulation came about by September 1800, when French General Vaubois came to terms with Major-General Pigot of the British Forces.Malta between 1800-1814 was a British protectorate, however under the Treaty of Paris it became an official British colony in 1814. Malta remained a colony and in 1964 acquired its independence and ten years later, it formulated into a republic.
