NSW Ombudsman calls for freeze on Taser guns

November 20, 2008THE NSW Ombudsman has recommended a two-year freeze on further roll-outs of Taser guns, saying police standards for their use are inadequate, and the health risks are unknown.Bruce Barbour told state parliament yesterday that general-duties police, who were issued the stun guns last month, were using Tasers at a higher rate than special operations police, who began using them in 2002.It is clear the number of incidents where Tasers will be used in the future will increase significantly, Mr Barbour said. There is already evidence of this. Tasers have been used on people on five occasions in the first two weeks of general-duties use. This compares with only 48 incidents over a five-year period by special unit officers. The Ombudsmans investigation found officers from special units had predominantly used Tasers from a distance, but in the first two weeks of use by general-duties officers, in four out of the five incidents the Tasers were used in drive-stun mode, where the gun is applied directly to skin or clothing. The use of Tasers, which stun a victim by emitting a 50,000-volt electric shock, have been linked to heart complications and death.Queensland police last week Tasered a 16-year-old girl who had ignored police instructions to move on, because she was waiting with a sick friend for an ambulance to arrive. In another case, a 56-year-old NSW man who had threatened police with a frying pan died 12days after receiving three Taser shocks.According to his death certificate, the man, who had heart disease, hepatitis C and schizophrenia, died of a heart attack.Mr Barbour was unable to say whether the Taser played a role in the mans death.

I am glad this guy has a single bed so maybe he is not populating the world with his seed. the 16 year old that fell off the overpass was high as a kite and said he will kill any cop as he was walking towards the officers. 80% of misuse thats probably the 10% of your brain that you use. look get a life your an education so you can form a better and intelligent opinion than a brunch of copulating feces

He's an electrician and a doctor all rolled into one.....a heart specialist at that !! This guy has WAY too much time on his hands. Clean your room, dude. I know your wife won't do it, 'cause you aren't going to find a woman who wants to listen to all of this shit.....so, you can't be married. He spends too much money on cigs (cough, cough) and whiskey. Shut that thing off and get to work. Who's going to cook the fries if you don't show up ???

amps, not volts current is the same

You're an idiot, I've personally been tazered, and I'd rather that then being shot, actually I'd prefer a tazer to capsicum spray, baton, or even being physically taken to the ground and restrained. 50,000 volts yes, but current kills, not voltage!

It's quite simple. If you are not a violent criminal, then you have nothing to fear from the police or a taser. To all those bleeding hearts out there, I urge you to spend one day out on the road with the police. I guarantee once you see what they deal with on a daily basis you will have no hesitation in supporting the use of tasers. You make the choice if you wish to bring violence upon police, thus the consequences of your actions and any resulting injuries are your fault and your fault alone.

You clearly have a very limited understanding of electricity and TASERs. It is a far stretch of the imagination to link a TASER deployment to a heart attack 12 days later. There is no evidence that a TASER deployment has ever caused a fatality. In the majority of causes the coroners reports show that the victims had illicit drugs in their blood, a much more likely cause of heart failure. A TASER is essentially a more compact version of a machine used by millions of physio therapists daily.

Well, If I had a heart condition, I'd make sure that I was a good little boy to the police to make SURE I don't get tasered. Simply as that. Back in the old day, people used to be so scared of the police that they would be too scared to say boo, now it's 'fuck you', 'fucken pig', and getting spat at. Of course some police are using their predominant power for their own personal excitment, some do a very good job in the service and we must look upon them as the heroes, not the other ones.
aussiert (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
Cops misusing their authority should be reviewed and not the tasers. I understand that tasers can be dangerous, however what about the honest cops that are using it adequately? They have the right do defend themselves in situations where their and the innocent public integrity is at risk.
